In 2015, the Jury decided to recognize the non-formal Civil Initiative “Let’s Save Kara Dere” with the Golden Key award for exercising their right to know to obtain information about alleged illegal construction at the seaside region of Kara Dere. The initiative comprises of young people, inhabitants of the region, journalists and other people who want to have a wild spot at the seaside for camping and relax. The informal group has used the APIA and public registers to cast light on the investment plan for construction in the region, as well as for finding and exposing legal violations related to the construction permit. The Initiative uses the social media to organize its campaign, including the formulation of information requests.
"It is important that every cause has its end. I hope that ours will be soon and it will be positive, as this award is. It has turned out that there are a lot of violations with regard to the construction in the region of Kara Dere. Access to information is among the ways to prove such violations. The information we obtained will be helpful for the protection of the area, as it also contains a lot of protected species," Lyuba Batembergska from the civil initiative emphasized at the receipt of the award.
Interview with Lyuba Batembergska is published in AIP newsletter issue 9(141) for September 2015: The Result is Essential When Fighting for a Cause (in Bulgarian).
The Center for Protection of the Rights in the Healthcare was presented an Honorary Diploma for active and efficient search of information related to the healthcare services in Bulgaria. As a result of their active campaign, including litigation, legal amendments were initiated and the National Health Insurance Fund started to publish on their web site information about funds paid to the hospitals. The NGO launched the platform “The Good Hospitals” www.dobritebolnici.info with systematized information on the monthly payments.
"We will say that we have won the access to information battle, when the successes stop to be celebrated on the Right to Know Day and become an everyday life. I believe that the FOI advocates should exchange knowledge and experience just like the administration does. We appreciate tha award very much not because it is an evaluation of our work, but because it is presented by the Access to Information Programme. If we have achieved anything in the freedom of informaiton field, it is exactly due to the efforts of AIP", d-r Stoycho Katsarov, Chair of the Steering Committee of the Center said.
An honorary diploma was given to the Association “Friends of the Railway Transport” for their consistent and persistent search of information related to the railway services in Bulgaria and two court cases as a result of which important information related to the passengers railway transport was disclosed. |
