41 nominees are competing in six categories for the Right to Know Day Awards
27.09.2016

To celebrate the International Right to Know Day, the Access to Information Programme (AIP) organizes and holds the annual Right to Know Day Awards Ceremony on September 28 since 2003.

The 2016 RKD Awards Ceremony will be held on 28 September 2016 (Wednesday) at 4:00 pm (EET) at the Literature Club Peroto (Sofia – National Palace of Culture).

Golden Key awards are given to a citizen, NGO, and journalist who have most actively exercised their right to information. The institution which has most efficiently organized the provision of public information and has developed positive practices is also recognized. The criteria are available at the special web site: http://www.righttoknowday.net/en/.

To dishonor bad practices, AIP gives anti-awards for the most non-transparent institution (“Padlock”) and for a most absurd/funny administrative decision on an access to information request (“Tied Key”).

In 2016, 41 nominees are competing in the six categories. Winners are selected by a 10-member jury.

On the occasion of the 2016 Right to Know Day, the AIP has launched a fundraising campaign: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/28-september-right-to-know-day-awards-ceremony#/.

Everyone could still contribute to the FOI Cause in Bulgaria.

The Right to Know Day Awards Ceremony is nationwide and is part of AIP overall advocacy campaign for enhanced exercise of the right to information and improved access to information provision practices in Bulgaria.

The Golden Key award has become a symbol of freedom of information, transparency and accountability.

28 September is the day when the Freedom of Information Advocates Network was established in 2002 at a litigation conference held in Sofia, Bulgaria. The AIP is one of the founders and active member of the FOIAnet.

AIP has been taking part in the FOIAnet initiatives to celebrate the Right to Know Day – participation in the 2011 FOIAnet video, 2012 “I have a right to know” Photo Contest, the 2014 Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, translation of pamphlets, dissemination of posters.

The 2016 Right to Know Day Awards ceremony in Bulgaria is supported by a grant from the America for Bulgaria Foundation.
